DSLR vs mirrorless for infrared

Optical viewfinders lie in infrared. Electronic viewfinders don’t. That one difference decides most of this.

Both DSLRs and mirrorless bodies convert well. The image quality difference is essentially zero once the same sensor is behind the same filter. What changes is the shooting experience — and in infrared, the shooting experience changes a lot.

DSLR: the traditional workhorse

A converted DSLR uses its phase-detect autofocus module through the mirror. That module was calibrated at the factory for visible light. After conversion, the shop recalibrates it for your chosen wavelength — but only for the lens attached during calibration, and only approximately for the rest.

  • Pros: huge selection of used bodies (Nikon D750, Canon 5D-series, etc.), long battery life, cheap to convert.
  • Cons: optical viewfinder shows a normal scene, not the IR image; AF micro-adjust may be needed per lens; live-view AF is slower.

Mirrorless: what you see is what you get

A mirrorless EVF shows the sensor’s actual output. In infrared, that means the viewfinder previews the false-color or monochrome scene in real time, including any custom white balance you’ve set. Focus is contrast/phase-detect off the sensor itself, so it’s inherently accurate at every wavelength with every lens — no per-lens calibration.

  • Pros: accurate AF across all lenses, IR-accurate live preview, IBIS on many bodies helps handheld longer exposures, silent shutter.
  • Cons: shorter battery life, some early mirrorless sensors have a “hot spot” center flare with certain lenses.

Hot spots — the mirrorless caveat

Certain lens/body combinations produce a bright circular flare in the center of the frame under IR light. This is a lens-coating issue, not a body issue, but it’s more noticeable on mirrorless because you can see it live. Always cross-reference your lens on Kolari’s or LifePixel’s hot-spot database before you shoot a serious project with new glass.

What I’d actually buy today

  • Best value DSLR: Nikon D750 or Canon 6D — cheap on the used market, full-frame, well-behaved with most lenses.
  • Best value mirrorless: Sony a7 II / III or Fujifilm X-T3 — great EVF, huge lens compatibility, easy conversion.
  • Best for full-spectrum + clip-in filters: a mirrorless body, every time. The live preview is the point.
If you’re starting out and don’t already own a spare DSLR, buy a used mirrorless body and convert it. The EVF makes the whole practice more legible.
